William F. Baker
William Frazier "Bill" Baker (born October 9, 1953 in Fulton , Missouri) is an American engineer . He is known for the construction of the Burj Khalifa , the tallest building in the world since March 2008.
William F. Baker studied at the University of Missouri (Bachelor) and the University of Illinois (Master). In 1981 he joined the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) and became their partner in 1996.
He is known as an expert in high-rise buildings and wide-span roof structures.
His construction projects include the Broadgate Exchange House (London, 1990), the Cayan Tower in Dubai, the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, the Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou , the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and the BP Pedestrian Bridge in Millennium Park in Chicago, the Raspberry Island - Schubert Club Band Shell in St. Paul (Minnesota) and the GM Renaissance Center Entry Pavilion (Detroit, 2005) and the McCormick Place North Building Expansion (Chicago, 1986 ), the Korean Air Lines Operations Center (Seoul, 1995), the Korea World Trade Center Expansion (Seoul, 2000), and the Virginia Beach Convention Center (Virginia Beach, 2007). In addition to John A. Ochsendorf and Philippe Block, Baker is significantly developing Computer-Aided Graphic Statics (CAGS)
Awards
- 2008: Fazlur Rahman Khan Medal of the CTBUH
- 2009: Fritz Leonhardt Prize of the Chamber of Engineers Baden-Württemberg and the Association of Consulting Engineers
- 2010: Gold Medal from the Institution of Structural Engineers
- In 2010 he gave the Annual Lecture at the Henderson Colloquium of the IABSE (Engineering an Idea).
- 2011: Honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart
- Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University
- 2014 International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Royal Academy of Engineering . He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE)
