William H. Ryan

William Henry Ryan (born May 10, 1860 in Hopkinton , Massachusetts , †  November 18, 1939 in Buffalo , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1909 he represented the state of New in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1866, William Ryan came to Buffalo, New York State with his parents, where he attended public schools. He then worked in the shoe trade and later in the insurance industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1894 and 1900 he was a member of the county council in Erie County . In 1898 he was its chairman.

In the 1898 congressional election , Ryan was elected to the 32nd  electoral district of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Rowland B. Mahany on March 4, 1899 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . From 1903 he represented the then newly established 35th district of his state. In 1908 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Ryan resumed his previous activities. He also got into the banking industry. In 1904 and 1924 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . He was also a member of several state commissions. William Ryan died in Buffalo on November 18, 1939.
