William J. Stone
William Joel Stone (born May 7, 1848 in Madison County , Kentucky , † April 14, 1918 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and from 1893 to 1897 the 28th governor of Missouri . He also represented this state in both chambers of Congress .
Early years
William Stone attended the public schools in Richmond . He then studied at the University of Missouri until 1867 . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1869. Then he started in Bedford ( Indiana to practice) in this profession. In 1870 he moved to Columbia , Missouri. There he initially continued his legal career. Between 1872 and 1874 he was a Vernon County attorney . William Stone was married to Sarah Louise Winston, with whom he had three children.
Political career
As a member of the Democratic Party , Stone was one of its electorates in the 1876 presidential election . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington.
On November 8, 1892, he was elected the new governor of Missouri; he took office on January 9, 1893. During his term of office an economic depression fell, the consequences of which the governor's government had to grapple with. In 1896 he was elected to the Democratic National Committee , where he remained until 1904. From 1900 to 1904 he was Deputy Federal Chairman of the Democratic Party. At the same time he worked as a lawyer.
Stone was a member of the United States Senate from 1903 until his death on April 14, 1918 . There he was represented in several committees. He was one of six US Senators who voted against United States entry into World War I in 1917 .
