William L. Guy (1968)

William Lewis Guy (born September 30, 1919 in Devils Lake , Ramsey County , North Dakota , † April 26, 2013 in West Fargo , North Dakota) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the 26th governor of the state of North Dakota between 1961 and 1973  .

Early years

William Guy attended what is now North Dakota State University until 1941 . During the Second World War he served three years in the US Navy . After the war, he continued his education at the University of Minnesota . Then he taught agriculture at North Dakota State University.

Political career

Guy served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1959 to 1961 . In 1960 he was elected the new governor of his state, with 49.4 percent of the vote in front of the Republican C. P. Hall. After he was confirmed several times, he was able to serve as governor between January 4, 1961 and January 2, 1973. During this time, the governor's terms were extended from two to four years. William Guy promoted industrial development and reformed the health system. The state administration was also reorganized. In the agricultural field, three sugar beet refineries were built. The governor was also involved in setting up a tourist attraction known as the Old West Trail Tourist Loop. In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson put the governor in charge of overseeing the elections in South Vietnam .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Guy ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in 1974. After a successful primary, he was defeated by the Republican incumbent Milton Young by just 177 votes. Until 1985, William Guy remained on some regional boards and committees. After that, he retired. Guy died on April 26, 2013 at the age of 93 in a retirement home in West Fargo of complications from Alzheimer's disease .
