William Patrick Clark (born October 23, 1931 in Oxnard , California - † August 10, 2013 in Shandon , California) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ) who was a member of the cabinet of US President Ronald Reagan as Secretary of the Interior .

Life

Early years and legal career

After attending school, William Clark studied at Stanford University before completing his legal training at Loyola Law School . He also served in the Counter Intelligence Corps , a counterintelligence unit in the US Army .

As a result, Clark embarked on a legal career. From 1969 to 1971 he served as Supreme Court of Appeal (Superior Court) of California, before the Supreme Court of California was appointed, where he served from 1973 to 1981. During this time he was also active as an advisor to Ronald Reagan, who ruled California between 1967 and 1975 as governor .

Rise in Washington

After Ronald Reagan's victory in the 1980 presidential election , he was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister and thus Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Haig . Clark held this office from February 25, 1981 to February 9, 1982. He then moved to the post of National Security Advisor , which he held for a year. Finally, as Minister of the Interior, he became a member of the Cabinet , in which he remained from November 18, 1983 to February 7, 1985. At the start of President Reagan's second term, previous Secretary of Energy, Donald P. Hodel, took his place.

William Clark, however, continued to work for the government. For example, President Reagan appointed him chairman of a working group that dealt with the US nuclear weapons program. He was also the president's special envoy for negotiations with the Navajo and Hopi tribes and a member of several government commissions. He also became a trustee of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library . He was also the CEO of his own company, the Clark Company , and a senior partner in the law firm Clark, Cali and Negranti .
