William R. Laird

William Ramsey Laird III (* 2. June 1916 in Keswick , Shasta County , California , †  7. January 1974 in Montgomery , West Virginia ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the State of West Virginia in the US Senate represented.

Life

William Laird attended the public schools and the Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg and the Kings College in Bristol ( Tennessee ), before he in 1944 graduated from West Virginia University made. During World War II , he served in the US Navy . After joining the bar, he began practicing law.

In 1955, Laird was a member of the West Virginia State Education Committee; He also served on the boards of Merchants National Bank in Montgomery and the Upper Kanawha Valley Development Association, and on the Laird Foundation's board of trustees . From 1955 to 1956 he served as Commissioner for the West Virginia Tax Department . He resigned from this post after being appointed to the US Senate in Washington , where he succeeded the late Harley M. Kilgore on March 13, 1956 . He resigned from the Senate on November 6 of the same year; he did not run for the by-election.

As a result, William Laird was again active as a lawyer in Fayetteville and Montgomery.
