William R. Myers

William Ralph Myers (born June 12, 1836 in Wilmington , Ohio , †  April 18, 1907 in Anderson , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In the year he was born in 1836, William Myers came with his parents to Anderson, Indiana, where he later attended public schools. Later he taught himself as a teacher. Between 1858 and 1860 he was head of land surveying in Madison County . During the Civil War , Myers was a soldier in an infantry unit in the Union Army , in which he rose to become captain. After the war he started teaching again as a teacher. In 1868 and 1869 he was a school councilor in Anderson. In this city he also sat on the school committee between 1871 and 1879. After studying law and his admission to the bar in 1871, he began to work in Anderson in this profession.

Politically, Myers was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Milton S. Robinson on March 4, 1879 . Since he was defeated by the Republican Thomas M. Browne in 1880 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1881 .

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Myers served as Secretary of State from 1882 to 1886, the executive officer of the Indiana state government. He held this office again between 1892 and 1894. In 1886 he acquired the newspaper "Anderson Democrat", which he subsequently published. At that time he also unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of Indiana. After completing his second term as Secretary of State in 1894, William Myers returned to practice as a lawyer in Anderson. He died there on April 18, 1907.
