Windows Deployment Services
The Windows Deployment Services , shortly WDS ( Engl. , Windows Deployment Services), the successor to the with Windows 2000 introduced RIS service ( Remote Installation Services ). The WDS services offer both the old RIS functionality and a new image process developed for Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7 in compatibility mode (mixed mode) .
advantages
- Fast for mass rollouts
- Future Microsoft installation method
- Graphical user interface
- Hotfixes, applications, drivers, and not by group policy influenced settings can be in the Image integrate
- ISO boot images for computers
- Multicast transmissions when used on Windows Server 2008 . This means that new clients can join the transmission at any time (the server simply starts the transmission again at the end until all clients are refueled)
disadvantage
- Boot time to image selection takes approx. 2-3 minutes
- More network traffic if individual computers are reinstalled (approx. 800 MB for a Windows XP basic installation)
Known bugs
- The implementation of the program from English to other languages is incomplete. For example, texts are cut off in some dialog windows. To create computer accounts via the WDS console, the "Domain Admins" group is always used instead of the language-neutral well known SID "S-1-5-domain-512", which only exists if the domain was created on an English-speaking Windows .
