Wissenschaftliche Nachrichten is an Austrian science newspaper.

It has been published since 1963. The founding initiative came from the working group of physics teachers at the general secondary schools in Vienna , who also acted as editors. At the beginning, the Main Association of Austrian Savings Banks financed the editions as the owner and publisher. The editor in charge was Walter Kranzer , who gathered ambitious colleagues around him. For decades, the magazine was printed for teacher training at the S II (upper level) schools and distributed by the state school boards. The sponsorship of the main association also added a section entitled “Economic and social geography, economic information”. The newspaper publisher is currently the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The current editor is Christian Wolny.

The magazine was published three times a year and has been an advanced training body for teachers (of philosophy, mathematics, science, geography and economics ) in high schools. Due to the general and popular science articles, the journal is also read by a broad audience with an interest in mathematics and science education. The authors and technical editors are mostly scientists and professors. It was distributed in several copies to the secondary schools (AHS = Gymnaien and BHS / BMS) via the state school councils

The Scientific News has six specialist sections, each managed by specialist editors:

  1. Basic science problems
  2. Biology and geosciences
  3. chemistry
  4. Mathematics (with part of the exercise)
  5. Physics and astronomy
  6. Economic and Social Geography , Business Information (NB .: for teachers of the subject Geography and Economics )

The current circulation is 12,500 copies and was mostly subscribed to in German-speaking countries and institutions in Europe and around the world. From issue no. 142, the Wissenschaftliche Nachrichten can only be accessed online. The background to this was the savings measures implemented by the Ministry of Education in Vienna. Thanks to the initiative of the Ministry of Education library, earlier volumes of the magazine were subsequently scanned in and their valuable contents made available online again.
