World Gold League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Gold League has been a tournament in the computer game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos that has been held since 2015 .

background

Warcraft III can be seen as the first computer game that a comprehensive renaissance in e-sports can boast. Originally released in 2002, the game was replaced in 2010 by the unofficial successor StarCraft II .

After the successor's initial success, more and more Warcraft III competitions disappeared. This has changed fundamentally since the mid-2010s. Because of the mechanics in Warcraft III, some of which are immensely different from Starcraft II, both games now exist in parallel in e-sports. Examples of such mechanics are existing heroes in Warcraft III, including special abilities, usable items and a significantly slower gameplay .

World Gold League

The World Gold League is a result of these developments. The tournament now has the status of world championships, albeit without official support from the publisher of Warcraft III, namely Blizzard Entertainment .

The current world champion is the orc player June 'Lyn' Park from South Korea (as of December 2019).
