As word melody , fachsprachlich intonation called, refers to the costs incurred by the ups and downs and the natural resonances of certain letter sounds sound of a word or whole phrases. Every word has an intonation that depends on the speaker and the speaking situation. The intonation can be meaningful or change the weighting of a sentence. The intonation can differ from region to region within a language. In the case of foreign words, the intonation is often adapted to one's own language. In many situations, however, one can assume a standard intonation, the accent and accentuation of which are also important.

Vowels are responsible for the frequency character of a word, while consonants are responsible for the "hardness" or "softness" of a word. The word “treatise”, for example, is hard and abrupt due to its consonants T and K, the pronunciation cannot be varied. The word "Blumenfeld", on the other hand, contains Bs, Ms and ends with a D, which softly intones the word (in non-standard pronunciation) and enables the speaker to "round off the tone". In the standard pronunciation, the word is pronounced by hardening the final voice with a "t".

The various intonations are often evaluated, so words like “love” and “soul” are often referred to as beautiful word melodies. This is most likely psychological, not least because of the meanings of the words, there is no scientific evidence for letter combinations that our ears like less or more than others.

Conscious use of word melodies is a characteristic of poetry where it is important for meter . Alliterations and other influencing factors of the word melodies make texts appear more fluid and compatible, as our brain processes texts and tones with similar sounds better and faster than others.

The term word melody is linked to the impression that the speaker is reproducing individual words at different pitches, even if this is not the case. The resonances of the letters simulate different tones in the flow of speech.

The accentuation of a syllable in a polysyllabic word form is called a word accent .
