List of breeds of chicken

The Wyandotten are a breed of chicken and come from the USA . The name of the breed is derived from the Indian tribe of the Hurons, who call themselves Wyandotte .

The first color type were the silver-black lined Wyandottes, followed by around 30 other colors. The weight of the rooster is 3.4-3.8 kg and that of the hen is 2.5-3.0 kg. Wyandotts lay 180 eggs weighing approx. 55 g, but these vary depending on the color. It is the same with the eggshell color, which ranges from yellow to dark brown depending on the color of the hen.

The breed used to be widespread. Today, poultry breeders prefer to breed the numerous colors of the dwarf Wyandottes .

history

The year 1865 is the starting year for the breeding of the Wyandottes. Breeders John Ray, HM Doubleday and Frederick Houdlette, as well as Messrs. Baker and Benson were involved in the project - but L. Whittaker ultimately achieved the breakthrough. It took until 1883 for recognition in the USA (color: "silver-black lined"). In the years 1894 and 1902 the colors "partridge-colored" and "silver-colored banded" followed. The name goes back to a suggestion by the breeder Frederick A. Houdlette, Boston / USA. Initially the breed was known as the American Sebright or Sebright-Cochin .

The first animals came to Germany also in 1883.
