yr.no is an internet weather service operated by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (NMI) in cooperation. The word yr means something like light drizzle , but also delighted , dizzy , limitless and wild .

Range of services

According to its own information, the service provides weather forecasts for over 8.3 million different locations around the world, which are linked to coordinates via GeoNames . A special feature here is that the for the places in Europe "hours precise" ( Norwegian "time for time" , English "hour by hour" ) continuous representation in the form of a Meteo gram , while for most places in the world over the expected weather history are available the weather forecast is accurate to within three hours. The representation of the forecasts of the local weather is therefore considerably more detailed than with the conventional representation method in the Internet and print media , in which three maps are presented individually for each day for a few hours apart. According to its own information, the service is the first provider of free detailed weather data.

Hourly forecasts are offered for the next 48 hours, and a forecast that is accurate to 6 hours for the next 8 to 9 days. Weather forecasts for Europe (except Scandinavia) are updated twice a day (around 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the hourly forecast, around 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. for the long-term forecast), while updates for Norway, for example, are more frequent.

Related services are also offered, such as weather radar , satellite images and pollen forecast . Many of the information provided is in the form of XML - feeds provided.

The numerous, largely Norway-related meteorological messages and additional information are mainly written in Bokmål and Nynorsk , the basic operation of the forecast query function and selected messages are also available in English , North Sami and Kven .

How the precise location forecast works

The forecasts at yr.no are based on various models, including the Norwegian HIRLAM (High Resolution Limited Area Model) and the EC model of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ( ECMWF , Reading , England). The earth is virtually covered with a grid , the crossing points of which in Northern Europe have, for example, a vertical and horizontal distance of 10 km each; A separate forecast is made in the data center for each of these grid points.

For a location that is not exactly on one of the grid points, the coordinates and elevation information are read from the GeoNames database. This is used to determine the distance between the location and the four nearest grid nodes and, based on this, an average value weighted according to distance is determined from the calculated weather forecasts for these four points. Finally, an altitude correction is made - above all in order to be able to calculate the correct temperature, since this varies with altitude at one and the same place due to the atmospheric temperature gradient .

history

The service started on September 19, 2007 as an extension of more than 70 years of collaboration between the NRK and DNMI and quickly became very popular in Norway. Already nine months after launching the service (ie in June 2008), he was just under 90% of the Norwegian population known and recorded 1.3 million users ( unique users ) per week. In 2010, between 1.4 and 3.1 million people visited the site per week, of which in the summer of 2010 around 70% came from Norway, 25% from Sweden and 5% from the rest of the world. In 2012 there were over 2.5 million and in the summer months up to 4.6 million unique users per week, with the second third of the year being the most popular as in previous years.

Yr.no is about half used by foreigners. According to a survey, Swedes and Danes trust yr.no more than their own weather service.
