Count rate

The counting rate is the mean repetition frequency of measurement signals that are counted as separate individual events over a defined period of time. The measured value obtained in this way is the number of events per selected time unit. An event in this sense is usually the registration of a photon , electron or other particle by a particle or radiation detector .

Usual units of the counting rate are counts per second , often abbreviated as cps, and counts per minute (English count = counting, counted event).

In a given experimental setup, the count rate obtained from a radioactive sample is approximately proportional to the activity of the sample.
