Time-synchronized pointer measuring device
A phasor measurement unit ( English time-synchronized phasor measuring device, Phasor Measurement Unit, PMU ) is a device that the complex amplitude measures of current and voltage at a particular time (Synchrophasor). From this, values such as voltage, phase angle, network frequency , frequency change, degree of attenuation etc. are calculated and linked to the time of the measurement. For example, one measurement is made per period of the network frequency. In order to enable synchronization of several measuring devices, each device uses a GPS time signal to link the determined numerical values with a measurement time and to transmit them to a control center via remote data transmission. There the data stream can be combined with further data streams from other measuring devices in order to calculate further information.
These meters are part of wide-area monitoring systems ( English Wide Area Monitoring System ) and used, for example the analysis of power flows, for subsequent event analysis or monitoring of the network dynamics in an entire power grid such as the European power grid . Acute network fluctuations, for example after power plant failures or a short circuit, can be observed as part of the assessment of the supply quality. Another application is the dynamic determination of the location at which an electrical event occurs in the power grid when at least two time-synchronized pointer measuring devices have mapped the event.
