Zettai Ryōiki

Zettai ryōiki ( jap. 絶対領域 ., Dt "absolute field / territory") refers to the area of skin between skirt or shorts and thigh - stockings ( thigh high socks ), and also transmit these clothes combination as such. It originally comes from the otaku slang, where it is a Moe attribute, but is also used outside of that in Japan.

The ratio between the length of the miniskirt, skin and stockings above the knee has its optimum with 4: 1: 2.5 with a tolerance of 25%.

origin

The term itself comes from the context of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE), which appeared in 1995 , but not yet in its current meaning. In a supplement to the VHS tapes, the term Zettai Kyōfu Ryōiki ( 絶 対 恐怖 領域 , "absolute terror field") was used as a translation for the English-language term AT Field ( AT フ ィ ー ル ド , AT Fīrudo ) used in the series, a concept of a protective shield within the series as a “sacred area that no one is allowed to enter.” ( 「「 人 に も 侵 さ れ ざ る 聖 な な る 領域 “nannin ni mo okasarezaru seinaru ryōiki“ 」 ) or“ wall of the soul ”( 「 心 の 壁 “kokoro no kabe “」 ) is described; but also the abridged version Zettai Ryōiki , as in the manga Neon Genesis Evangelion in which it is specified as a Furigana for AT Field .

Starting from this “sacred area into which no one is allowed to enter”, the new coinage followed in today's sense. This can be traced back to a blog entry in March 2001, in which the clothing style of Mayura is described, a character from the computer program Ukagaka ( 伺 か ) can be created with the desktop mascot.

The term spread quickly in the otaku scene, is now part of the specialist vocabulary there, and is often found in discussions, amateur and publishing magazines; But it also spread beyond this subculture and was also included in the general Daijisen dictionary . Within the subculture, Zettai Ryōiki is sometimes divided into different levels.

The Japanese company Banpresto , which produces video games for NGE, tried to protect the trademark 絶 対 領域 on February 13, 2006 , but was refused on June 26 of the same year without examination due to unpaid fees.
