Civil Croatia ( Croat . Civilna Hrvatska ) was a historical term that stood from the 16th to the 19th century for Croatia that was not under the direct military administration of Austria, ie was assigned to the Kingdom of Hungary . The term civil Croatia is always used complementary to the term military border. The military border then comprised certain areas of Croatia that bordered the Ottoman Empire .

When the military border was created, the Croatian Ban and the Sabor were deprived of military command over certain parts of Croatia. Instead, the high command was handed over to Archduke Karl and the council of war in Graz. Some historical regions of Croatia were thus partly under the direct military administration and partly under the civil administration of Croatia. In 1881 the military border (Croatian Vojna krajina ) was finally dissolved and subordinated to the civil authorities of Hungary and the autonomous kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia belonging to the Kingdom of Hungary .
