As is common with tablets, the iPad does not have a pointing device that moves a mouse pointer across the screen. Operation takes place with the user's fingers, which can trigger different functions with multi-touch gestures. All gestures on the iPhone work on the iPad too. Additional gestures were also introduced. For example, a preview of a stack of photos can be opened using a spreading gesture. In addition, with the installation of iOS 5.0 on the iPad 2 and with iOS 5.0.1 on the iPad 1, it is possible to carry out additional multi-touch gestures. These switch between programs and move programs into the background without having to use the home button; they are performed with four to five fingers. As with the iPhone and iPod touch, the iPad cannot be operated with a conventional pen, for example a stylus or ballpoint pen, due to the capacitive touchscreen . Some providers offer special stylus that simulate finger touches. These are helpful if, for example, you are wearing gloves and so cannot use your fingers on the touchscreen.

A virtual keyboard, adapted to the requirements of the program, is displayed - if necessary - at the bottom of the screen. Instead, an external keyboard can be connected via Bluetooth or a keyboard dock. For this, Apple offers a dock with keyboard that corresponds to the layout of the Apple Bluetooth aluminum keyboard from 2008.

All important programs of the device can be operated both vertically and horizontally on the screen; the built-in motion sensor detects the spatial position and rotates the image accordingly.

software

Apple's iPadOS is used as the operating system for the iPad .

In addition to the already integrated programs (so-called " apps "), only apps from the App Store and web apps, i.e. programs written in HTML and JavaScript , can be installed. All of these programs available in the App Store for iOS can be used on the iPad. Apps developed only for iPhone and iPod touch can also be used, and the image can be upscaled to make better use of the screen. The individual office applications of the iWork family are available from Apple as special versions adapted to the multi-touch operation of the iPad. The iLife programs iMovie , GarageBand and iPhoto has implemented Apple also versions for the touch operation of the iPad. The iBooks app, which can be used to buy and view e-books , is not included in the scope of delivery, but can be downloaded free of charge from the app store. With the iBookstore, Apple is trying to penetrate the e-book market as well. For this purpose, Apple has signed contracts with five American publishers.

Apple is also trying to establish the iPad as a playback medium for electronic newspapers and magazines - with growing success. Numerous magazines and newspapers have been made available as e-books for the iPad. In February 2011 Rupert Murdoch and Apple presented The Daily , the world's first daily newspaper developed exclusively for the iPad. At the presentation of the iPad 2, Steve Jobs announced that of the approximately 350,000 apps in the app store, over 65,000 were specially created for the iPad. On June 11, 2012, Apple announced 225,000 apps specially created for the iPad.

Apple's development environment Xcode supports the iPad from version 3.2.2. Starting with this version, Xcode also contains an iPad simulator and the associated SDK . A Mac computer with Mac OS X version 10.6.2 or higher is required for development. To test the programs on the iPad and to be able to offer software in the App Store, a fee-based membership in the iOS Developer Program is required. If you are a member of the iPhone Developer University Program , testing is free.

The operating system of the iPad is multitasking and can therefore run several applications in parallel as well as switch between different running applications. Up to iOS 4.2.1, however, Apple only made this functionality available to a small number of its own applications. In November 2010, functionality was introduced to switch between several running applications. A special technology (some inactive applications are stopped and continue to run when notifications are displayed or received) conserves the battery and the user still has the experience of multitasking.

As on the iPhone, Adobe Flash is not available on the iPad. Steve Jobs justified the offensive waiver of Flash with programming errors from Adobe , which cause system crashes and also shorten the battery life.

IPad supports DRM to protect purchased media content and applications. Data can only be transferred from the computer through iTunes. A connection to iTunes or Wi-Fi is required for activation .

The iPad is designed as a personal device and does not offer the possibility of managing different user accounts; only restrictions can be made (keyword protection of minors ). Furthermore, all users of an iPad access common data and share e-mails, calendars and other information.

The following wireless interfaces are also supported via WLAN, some of which can also be licensed for accessory manufacturers:

  • AirPlay for direct transfer of music, video or screen to an AirPlay-enabled device such as Apple TV or hi-fi systems (since iOS 4)
  • AirPrint for direct printing to AirPrint-enabled printers without the need for a computer (since iOS 4)
  • Sync (since iOS 5)
  • AirDrop For exchanging content with other iOS devices (since iOS 7)

Because the iPhone and later also the iPad are restricted to Apple's services and the App Store, which means that many users feel downright “locked in jail”, the term jailbreak has established itself for software that “breaks” out of this restriction enables.

With iOS 5.1.1, Apple stopped supplying the first iPad with the latest versions of iOS less than two years after the product was launched. As a result, some apps that required the latest iOS version could not be installed. Since September 17th, 2013 it is possible to install older versions of the apps.

In the meantime, security gaps are known in iOS 5, which among other things allow unauthorized system access.

Smart Cover and Smart Case

Apple offers protective covers in numerous designs, most of which are made of polyurethane or leather .

With the iPad 2, the Smart Cover was introduced in several colors. This protective cover is held on the device with magnets. The iPad goes to sleep when the cover is closed and reactivated when it is opened. The cover folds up at the back to form a support. The Smart Case is a further development of this. It offers the same functions and also protects the back of the device. It is made of polyurethane and is available in several colors.

Adapter and cable

With the help of two adapters, which are sold together as a camera connection kit , digital cameras can be connected via USB or SD cards can be read out. USB sticks cannot be connected. The Camera Connection Kit is also available for the Lightning connection of the newer models. This consists of products that can be purchased separately, so you can no longer buy the USB and SD adapter together. A digital AV adapter (HDMI) and a VGA adapter with which the iPad can be connected to a monitor or projector are available separately. The entire screen content is transmitted 1: 1 with a maximum of 1080p . For products with a Lightning connector, there is also an adapter that allows old accessories to be used for the 30-pin dock connector.

Apple Pencil

For the iPad Pro, Apple presented the Apple Pencil on September 9, 2015, an active input pen (also digitizer, active stylus ) that can be used for drawing, writing and painting. The stylus is pressure sensitive and dependent on the angle of inclination. For example, it is possible to draw thicker lines with greater pressure as well as shading with a corresponding incline of the pen. According to the manufacturer, the pen offers a usage time of 12 hours with a fully charged battery. With a charging time of 15 seconds, a quick charge function enables a renewed use time of 30 minutes. The pen contains 15 different chips.

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

On October 30, 2018, the 2nd generation of the Apple Pencil was presented in New York. The Pencil is compatible with the iPad models 11 "iPad Pro and 12.9" iPad Pro (3rd generation and 4th generation). The pencil can be attached to the iPad using magnets and charged. In addition, the active function can be changed by double-tapping the pen.

Sales figures

Apple says it has sold a million devices in the 28 days after the first iPad went on sale on April 3, 2010. At the time, it was only available in the US. In less than two years, the iPad's share of the tablet market fell from 66.6% in the third quarter of 2011 to 28% in the second quarter of 2013, according to Strategy Analytics.

Of the 40.5 million iPads sold worldwide in 2011, a total of 17.4 million were sold in the US market alone, accounting for 43% of global sales.

criticism

When the first iPad appeared, the apps and the long battery life were rated positively, while the limited scope of delivery, the lack of support for Adobe Flash , and the non-existent USB port were criticized. Michael Spehr criticized in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that direct access to the file system is not possible.

David Pogue of the New York Times also pointed out that a laptop offers more features at a lower price.

Since (similar to the iPhone ) the battery is permanently installed and cannot be replaced, the device must be repaired if the battery is defective or weak.

Others

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Apple agreed in October 2012 on a usage fee for the design of the Swiss station clock as an app. Previously, Apple had been accused of adopting the design of this station clock in the clock app under iOS 6 without consent. In November 2012, the Tages-Anzeiger wrote , citing various sources, that the usage fee was apparently around 20 million Swiss francs (around 16.5 million euros in 2012).

On January 1, 2016, the prices for all models in Germany were increased by € 8.32 and € 8.33 respectively. The reason for this was the GEMA fees charged for the first time for smartphones and tablets , which Apple passed on directly to customers.
