history

Vorstadt Stein (here Innerer Stein) around 1850

Today's Steingasse is an ancient road that was part of the old Roman road , more precisely the Untere Straße . The district emerged from the former suburb of Stein. Together with Mülln, it is one of the oldest suburbs in the city of Salzburg and initially consisted of two parts:

The Inner Stone was the narrow settlement area on both sides of the Steingasse between the Inner Stone Gate and the Outer Stone Gate (today the Engelwirtsbrunnen stands instead of the fortification at the current end of the Steingasse), where the stone (or the rock) of the Kapuzinerberg in each case directly to the street reaches.

The Outer Stone was logically that part of the settlement area on both sides of the Steingasse outside the Outer Stone Gate. Today, this part of the old stone alley is called after there once living Princess Sophie of Arenberg Arenbergstraße . In the time of the prince-archbishop the district extended out of town to the last house in the alley, the former tavern at the cross (also tavern for begging reversal). Here the rock arch of the Kapuzinerberghang comes very close to the road again. At the beginning of the Arenbergstrasse is the Villa Ferch-Erggelet , the representative, former factory building of the Neustein leather factory.

As a consequence, the room was southeast increasingly built the Kapuzinerberg with various solitary farms, and so are in the 19th century under the exterior stone much the stately homes ( Schloss Elsenheim -Rehling, Castle Furberg , Schloss Blumenstein -Kuenburg) and farms and houses at the Gersbach to the Vogelsang-Schlösschen .

At the end of Steingasse you will find the Engelwirtsbrunnen. This was created on behalf of Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun and Hohenstein in 1696 and was first set up in front of the old Andräkirche (1418–1861) on Platzl . In 1751 the fountain was relocated to the “Gasthaus zum Goldenen Engel” at the beginning of Steingasse and in 1890 it was placed on the Outer Stone for traffic reasons.
