'Masechele Caroline Ntšeliseng Khaketla (* 1918 in Berea , Basutoland , now Lesotho , † 13 August 2012 in Maseru , born as ' Masechele Caroline Ntšeliseng Ramolahloane ) was a Lesotho writer and teacher. She wrote her works in Sesotho .

Life

'Masechele Caroline Ntšeliseng Ramolahloane was born as the third daughter of Luka and' Maphilip Ramolahloane in Berea in what is now the Berea district . She attended primary schools in Liphiring and Siloe. From 1933 to 1935 she went to school in Morija and was the first Mosotho woman to acquire the Junior Certificate . She then attended Fort Hare University College and in 1941 was the first Mosotho woman to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree - in education . She was employed as a practice teacher at the Lovedale Missionary Institute before teaching at the Thabana Morena Girls School in Morija. From there she came to teach at Morija Training College, where she met her future husband, Bennett Makolo Khaketla . In 1946 they married. Both taught at Basutoland High School (now Lesotho High School) in Maseru - briefly also at St. Catherine's College - until her husband was dismissed by the colonial authorities for political reasons, so that they moved to Nigel in 1950 . In 1953 they returned to Basutoland, where her husband began a political career ( Basutoland African Congress , Basutoland Congress Party , Marematlou Freedom Party ). 'Masechele Khaketla taught again at Basutoland High School, including the later King Letsie III. In 1979 she became the first Mosotho woman to serve as an assessor in the High Court . From 1960 she built the Iketsetseng primary school (Sesotho for “The place where you do it yourself”), which was attended by the future Queen 'Mamohato , among others . In 1992, Khaketla gave up running the school.

Khaketla published twelve books, including collections of poetry. In her drama she addressed social problems, including family conditions. Mosali eo o 'neileng eena (German roughly: "The woman you gave me") is about a budding clergyman who returns to Basutoland from the Second World War, enters into love affairs and finally belongs to the clergy.

Khaketla was committed to the Anglican Church . She had six children, including long-time minister and senator 'Mamphono Khaketla (* 1960). 'Masechele Khaketla died of kidney failure and was buried in Kokobela, Maseru District .

Awards

Khaketla was the first Mosotho ever to receive an honorary doctorate in literature from the National University of Lesotho in 1983 . In 1997 she received the Gold Record of Achievement from the American Biographical Institute . In 2001 the University of Fort Hare awarded her another honorary doctorate.
