Paris 1000 km race in 1962

The fourth 1000 km race of Paris , also 1000 km de Paris, Montlhéry , took place on October 21, 1962 at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry . The race was the 15th round of the sports car world championship this year.

The race

The 1962 event was the third consecutive 1000 km race in Montlhéry. After the endurance race was launched in 1956 , the organizers had difficulties in the following years to obtain the financial means necessary for a race. It was not continued until 1960 and in 1961 the race was given the status of a championship run for the first time. The FIA GT Cup , introduced in 1960, was discontinued at the end of 1961 . Part of the GT races covered by this championship went into the 1962 World Sports Car Championship . This also included the 1000 km race in Paris, which was the first world championship run.

The Linas-Montlhéry racetrack was still treacherous in the 1960s and feared by many drivers. The banked turns were still poorly secured at the top and had a bumpy surface. The entrance and exit, which connected the oval with the street course, were narrow and partially limited by a 1 meter high wall. In the oval, they always rode in the middle of the route, as the upper edge was far too unsafe. A week after the death of Henri Oreiller , who had a fatal accident at the Coupe du Salon , another driver, Paul Armagnac (during training on October 20), died. The Armagnac accident was similar to Oreiller's death. He too lost control of the racing car at the end of the steep bend before the start and finish, skidded across the street and hit a barrier hard. Armagnac was thrown out of the car and lay on the racetrack with several broken bones. Although he was quickly brought to the Linas clinic, he succumbed to serious injuries two days after the accident.

In 1962 the Mexican brothers Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez repeated their success from the previous year. This time in front of the two Britons John Surtees and Mike Parkes , who, like the Rodríguez brothers , drove a Ferrari 250 GTO .
