Georges Berger (born September 14, 1918 in Molenbeek , † August 23, 1967 in Adenau at the Nürburgring ) was a Belgian racing driver .

Career

Georges Berger began his career in national races in Belgium. His first vehicle was a Jicey BMW , with which he competed in numerous Formula 2 races between 1948 and 1952 . In 1953 he bought a Gordini Type 15 , with which he reached third place in the Formula 1 race in Rouen , which was not part of the world championship . Berger also took part in two races for the world championship. In 1953 he drove the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps and in 1954 the French Grand Prix in Reims . He contested both races with his Gordini, but each time he had an engine failure.

Berger has participated in countless sports car races with vehicles such as the Maserati , AC Bristol and a Ferrari 250 GT . His greatest successes remained the victories in the Tour de France for automobiles in 1960 and 1961 , as co-driver of Willy Mairesse .

Berger had a fatal accident at the wheel of a Ferrari in an 84-hour sports car marathon on the Nürburgring in 1967.
