The 1953 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 13th on the Monza circuit and was the last of nine races for the 1953 World Cup .
background
Ferrari brought two prototypes of the Ferrari 553 Squalo type , which were intended for the 1954 season , to the race. However, Ascari preferred the old Type 500 . The two new vehicles were driven by Umberto Maglioli and Piero Carini , who were registered alongside the regular crew (Ascari, Farina , Villoresi and Hawthorn ) . Maserati split the fourth car of the still injured González to the two debutants Sergio Mantovani and Luigi Musso . The other vehicles drove as usual, Fangio , Marimón and Bonetto . The British teams from Connaught and HWM were entered with three vehicles each. Cooper reported a vehicle with an Alta engine to Stirling Moss . The new Alta engine was faster on the straight than the Ferrari, but the car had significant weaknesses in the chassis and brakes. The field of 30 drivers was supplemented by numerous private entries.
training
Ascari reached pole position in the Ferrari with half a second ahead of Fangio in the Maserati and his team-mate Farina. Marimón, Villoresi, and Hawthorn made up the second row.
run
Ascari used his pole position to get off to a good start and immediately took the lead, but was pushed hard by Marimón on the first lap. Fangio and Farina followed closely. In the following laps, a tough battle developed among these four drivers, with one or the other leading. Moss, meanwhile, had fallen back to the end of the field, mistakenly assuming his vehicle had an oil leak; however, it turned out to be just an overflow of excess oil. Further down the field, a similarly exciting battle developed between Villoresi, Hawthorn and Trintignant . The fight of the leaders lasted until the 46th lap, when Marimón reported to the pits with a defective oil cooler , lost a lap, but rejoined the combat group. The group stayed together until the last corner. There, Ascari lost control of his vehicle and spun. The cause of the accident was probably that he had to avoid a group of lapped drivers and came to the part of the track that was smeared by rubber abrasion. Farina was able to dodge into the grass, but Marimón had no chance to dodge and hit the Ferrari on the side. Both drivers were uninjured. Fangio was able to avoid the accident on the inside of the lane and thus scored his first victory in a world championship run in 1953. Farina was second, Villoresi third. Due to the regulation valid at the time that a vehicle that was to be classified had to have reached the destination, Ascari was not listed as a third party, but as a failure.
