The 1989 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 10th and was the twelfth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Jean Alesi took over the Tyrrell cockpit at the side of Jonathan Palmer , which he had left with Johnny Herbert two weeks earlier in Belgium so that he could concentrate on his participation in the Formula 3000 championship. At EuroBrun , Gregor Foitek , who had not yet qualified, was replaced by Oscar Larrauri , who thus returned to the Grand Prix scene.

Alain Prost , leading in the world championship standings , announced in advance of the race that he would be competing for Scuderia Ferrari from the following season . Nelson Piquet announced his move from Lotus to Benetton . Then Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly were signed as future Lotus pilots.

training

Between the pole-setter Ayrton Senna and his team-mate Alain Prost, the two Ferrari drivers Gerhard Berger and Nigel Mansell qualified for second and third on the grid. The two Williams team- mates Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen formed the third row on the grid.

Stefano Modena's training times were not recognized due to being underweight .

As on several of the previous race weekends, the majority of the drivers who had to take part in the pre-qualification completed faster laps than the two Rial pilots Christian Danner and Pierre-Henri Raphanel , who were allowed to complete the regular qualification. The lap time with which Stefan Johansson retired after the pre-qualification, for example , would have meant 20th place on the grid in regular practice.

run

Boutsen moved up to fifth place during the first lap. Otherwise the order of qualification in the first five positions remained unchanged until the 21st round. Then, however, there was an exchange of places between Prost and Mansell.

On lap 41 Prost passed Berger and took the lead three laps later when Senna retired due to an engine failure. He finally won ahead of Gerhard Berger, who scored his first World Cup points of the current season. Thierry Boutsen came third in front of his teammate Riccardo Patrese as well as Jean Alesi and Martin Brundle .

Prost started the last three races of the season with a 20-point lead over his teammate Senna.
