The 1989 Canadian Grand Prix took place in Montreal on June 18 and was the sixth race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the US Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

For the first time this season, it was not Ayrton Senna who qualified for pole position , but his team-mate Alain Prost . Senna followed in second place in front of Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger . Behind them, their two teammates Nigel Mansell and Thierry Boutsen formed the third row in front of Stefano Modena and Alex Caffi .

run

Due to rain in the morning, the track was not completely dry at the time of the start. Nevertheless, Nigel Mansell, Alessandro Nannini and Luis Pérez-Sala decided to head for the pit at the end of the warm-up lap to have slicks fitted. Mansell and Nannini assumed that they were at the end of the field when they accelerated out of the pit lane after changing tires. In reality they were at the front of the field because the start had been delayed slightly, which the two of them hadn't noticed in the pit lane. They were disqualified with the black flag. Pérez-Sala, whose tire change took a little longer, duly lined up at the end of the field and was therefore not penalized.

Prost led the race after Mansell and Nannini were disqualified from Senna, Patrese, Berger and Boutsen. At the end of the first lap, Prost and Caffi switched to dry tires. The Frenchman retired shortly afterwards due to suspension damage. As a result of a pit stop by Senna, Patrese was in the lead from his team-mate Boutsen from the fourth lap. Stefan Johansson left too early after changing his tires and dragged an impact wrench and parts of its air hose behind him. He was immediately disqualified.

Boutsen was one of the last to switch to slicks. Shortly afterwards there was another rain shower. The leading Patrese, who was still equipped with rain tires, was able to build a massive lead because his opponents on slicks had to return to the pits at a comparatively slow speed in order to have another change to rain tires made. Derek Warwick and Nicola Larini also benefited from this and came in second and third.

Senna caught up quickly. On lap 30 he pushed Larini, who was eliminated shortly afterwards due to an electrical fault, from third place. When Patrese headed for the pits on lap 35 to have new rain tires fitted, Warwick took the lead from Senna. A little later he retired due to an engine failure.

Seven laps before the end of the race, Boutsen overtook his team-mate Patrese and was therefore in second place behind Senna. When he had to give up due to an engine failure, the Williams team won a double . It was Thierry Boutsen's first Grand Prix victory. Andrea de Cesaris came third ahead of Nelson Piquet , René Arnoux and Alex Caffi.
