The 1992 Canadian Grand Prix took place in Montreal on June 14th and was the seventh race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Due to outstanding payments, legal proceedings and flight delays, the Andrea Moda Formula team had no engines at the start of the race weekend. The Brabham team, which also used Judd units, agreed to lend a copy so that at least Roberto Moreno could be added to the registration list. However, he had to retire after completing four laps in the pre-qualification due to a technical defect.

Gabriele Tarquini contested the weekend with the first completed copy of the new Fondmetal GR02

training

For the first time this season, it was not Nigel Mansell but the reigning world champion Ayrton Senna who qualified for pole position. Mansell followed in third place behind his team-mate Riccardo Patrese and ahead of Senna's team-mate Gerhard Berger . Michael Schumacher shared the third row with Johnny Herbert . Martin Brundle followed in front of the two Ferrari F92A driven by Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli .

As in the previous year , an average speed of 200 km / h was only just missed during the best lap of the fastest person in training.

run

Senna took the lead ahead of Mansell, Patrese, Berger, Schumacher, Brundle and Herbert. Further back in the field, the two Larrousse pilots Bertrand Gachot and Ukyō Katayama collided . After Gachot had been pushed by marshals later as a result of another accident, he was disqualified for unauthorized use of outside help.

In the course of an attempt to take the lead, Mansell came off the track in a bend, landed his front wing in the gravel bed after driving over the curbs and turned. Patrese lost one place to Berger due to the evasive maneuver required, which resulted in a one-two lead for McLaren . Mansell was unable to continue the race. His frustration with this self-inflicted departure was expressed in derogatory remarks to journalists. He also berated McLaren team boss Ron Dennis .

On lap 19, Capelli had an accident due to a defect in his Ferrari . Senna retired after 38 laps due to electrical damage. As a result, Berger was in the lead ahead of Patrese, Schumacher and Brundle. In the course of a lapping maneuver, Brundle overtook his team-mate Schumacher. However, this came second a little later, as both Brundle and Patrese had to give up due to transmission problems. Alesi was third. March pilot Karl Wendlinger took fourth place. Ukyō Katayama was up to the 62nd round in fifth place. Then he retired because of an engine failure, so that in the end Andrea de Cesaris and Érik Comas finished fifth and sixth.

With their good results, Wendlinger and Comas in particular reduced the risk for their teams of having to take part in the pre-qualification from the second half of the season.
