The 1992 Belgian Grand Prix took place on August 30th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the twelfth race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
For financial reasons, the traditional Brabham team decided to withdraw from Formula 1 immediately and permanently.
In favor of the debutant Emanuele Naspetti , who brought sponsorship money with him, Paul Belmondo had to vacate his place at March . Christian Fittipaldi returned to the Minardi team instead of substitute driver Alessandro Zanardi after a break of several weeks due to injury .
The Scuderia Ferrari brought a copy of a further developed version of the F92A to the start. The car was called F92AT and was piloted by Jean Alesi .
The Italian team Andrea Moda Formula was here for the last time at a Grand Prix. In the night from Friday to Saturday, the team boss Andrea Sassetti was arrested by the Belgian police on suspicion of check fraud. Thereupon the FISA excluded the team from further participation in the world championship.
training
As a result of Brabham's withdrawal, the registration list consisted of exactly 30 pilots. Since this was the maximum number allowed to participate in the training, a pre-qualification was not necessary.
During the first free practice session on Friday morning, Érik Comas had such a serious accident in the fast Blanchimont corner that he lost consciousness for 17 minutes. He did not take part in the rest of the race weekend.
Nigel Mansell secured his tenth pole position of the year ahead of Ayrton Senna , Michael Schumacher , Riccardo Patrese , Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger . Thierry Boutsen and Mika Häkkinen formed the fourth row ahead of Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert .
The lap times achieved during the first qualifying round on Friday could not be beaten on Saturday due to rain. Nevertheless, some pilots took to the track to test the behavior of their vehicles on rain tires. This led to two more serious accidents by Gerhard Berger and Pierluigi Martini , each caused by aquaplaning . Both pilots were uninjured.
run
While Senna took the lead ahead of Mansell and Patrese, Berger's McLaren MP4 / 7A suffered a clutch defect. However, the following pilots managed to avoid the stalled car in time. On the second lap, Mansell passed Senna on the Blanchimont curve.
When it started to rain after a few minutes, Mansell was one of the first to head for the pits to have rain tires fitted. Patrese, who had also passed Senna shortly before, took the lead. When he too turned into the pit lane to change tires, Senna, who was speculating that the rain would only last for a short time, took the lead. As this turned out to be incorrect, he had his tires changed after ten laps, which put Mansell back in the lead. Patrese followed in second place ahead of Schumacher.
As the track dried up increasingly, Schumacher decided on lap 30 after a small driving error in the Stavelot area to switch back to slicks. The two Williams drivers initially did not react to this and lost time with Schumacher with their worn rain tires. This took the lead in the 34th lap in front of the two. His teammate Brundle was fourth ahead of Häkkinen and Senna. Due to a defect in the exhaust of his car, Mansell fell further behind the leader Schumacher. Patrese struggled with a similar problem, but was still able to defend third place against Brundle. On the third to last lap, Senna overtook Häkkinen and was fifth.
Michael Schumacher scored his first Grand Prix victory and the Williams team secured the Constructors' World Championship in 1992.
