The Italian Grand Prix in 1994 (officially the Pioneer 65 o Gran Premio d'Italia ) was a Formula 1 - Race , which on September 11, 1994 at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza has taken place. It was the twelfth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1994 .
The 53-lap race was won by British driver Damon Hill in a Williams-Renault , while Austrian Gerhard Berger came second in a Ferrari and Finn Mika Häkkinen came third in a McLaren-Peugeot . The Frenchman Jean Alesi secured pole position in a Ferrari and led the race until his gearbox failed on lap 15.
The victory enabled Hill to get closer to Michael Schumacher on eleven points. Schumacher was banned for this and the following race, the Portuguese Grand Prix , due to his offense in the British Grand Prix . His place was taken by the Finn JJ Lehto , who was still his teammate at the beginning of the season.
The day after the race, the Lotus team filed for bankruptcy, even though they still competed in the remaining races of the season. Lotus brought an improved Mugen engine to the race, which brought Johnny Herbert his best result of the season with fourth place in qualifying. The hope for points was ended by a collision with Eddie Irvine's Jordan in the first corner.
Reports
background
The race was actually canceled on August 12, 1994 after the local authorities refused to cut 123 trees for safety reasons. The trees in question were at the Lesmo curves that had no suitable run-off areas . Following the announcement, Gianni Letta , an Italian secretary to the Council of Ministers, went to Cannes to meet the President of the FIA , Max Mosley , and discuss the problem with him. At this meeting, which was also attended by the Ferrari driver and driver representative Gerhard Berger , it was agreed that adapting the shape of the curve would reduce the speed.
run
The two Ferraris and Damon Hill got off to a good start and were heading for Turn 1 side by side. Eddie Irvine scored in the curve of the Lotus of Johnny Herbert . Herbert was spun and caught in the rear right part of David Coulthard's car, blocking the track and interrupting the race. Coulthard drove on with Hill's replacement vehicle and Herbert sacrificed his starting position to get into his replacement vehicle. The two Ferraris had also managed the second start, but Jos Verstappens and Alessandro Zanardi's vehicles got tangled in the Curva Grande , which caused Gianni Morbidelli to slide into a wall. Jean Alesi extended his lead over his team-mate Gerhard Berger until problems with his transmission became apparent. Berger took the lead, but got stuck in the pit lane behind Olivier Panis , which is why the two Williams were able to take the lead. On lap 30, Michele Alboreto's transmission failed , which put oil on the track. The oil spun Pierluigi Martini on lap 32 and Mark Blundell on lap 40. These eliminations brought Ukyō Katayama to fifth place, until the six laps later also spun and collided. David Brabham became the last driver to retire after suffering a flat tire which damaged his vehicle. The two Williams continued to lead the race until Coulthard ran out of fuel on the last corner. This resulted in Berger's second, Häkkinen's third, Barrichello's fourth, and Brundle's fifth. Coulthard got sixth place because all other vehicles were one lap behind.
