Reports
background
During the two weeks between the Dutch Grand Prix and the third-to-last World Championship round of the year in Monza, the FIA decided to cancel all results achieved by Team Tyrrell in the 1984 season and to allow them to participate in the remaining races of the year to forbid. The reason for this was the illegal use of additional water tanks that had served to artificially increase the weight of the racing cars during the controls, which was a massive violation of the rules. The 1984 Italian Grand Prix thus became the first race in Formula 1 history in which only vehicles with turbo engines took part.
After it became known that Ayrton Senna had signed with Team Lotus for the 1985 season despite a still valid contract , he was suspended from his previous team Toleman . Stefan Johansson , who was looking for a new team due to Tyrrell's disqualification, was hired to replace the Brazilian. The Italian debutant Pierluigi Martini drove a second Toleman TG184 .
Gerhard Berger was again a guest starter for ATS .
training
For the seventh time this season, defending champion Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position. Alain Prost came second ahead of Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda . Teo Fabi and Keke Rosberg formed the third row on the grid.
run
Due to a gearbox damage during the warm-up lap, Manfred Winkelhock was unable to compete.
While Piquet and Prost were able to defend their starting positions, de Angelis fell behind Patrick Tambay, who had started well from eighth place . Behind them followed Fabi and Lauda, who also managed to overtake de Angelis in the second lap.
On the fourth lap, Prost had to retire due to an engine failure. Fabi spun on lap seven and fell back to eighth place.
By the 16th lap, nine of the 25 pilots who had started had already retired, including Piquet who had been in the lead up to then. As a result, Tambay took the lead in front of Fabi, who had fought his way up again. Michele Alboreto followed behind third-placed Lauda .
In the 44th lap there was another change in leadership due to the technical failure of the leader. This time Tambay was the victim. Since Fabi had also been eliminated shortly before, Alboreto took second place behind the now leading Lauda. Riccardo Patrese , who had already been lapped, came third ahead of Stefan Johansson . As both Eddie Cheever and Piercarlo Ghinzani had to give up a few laps before the end of the race due to a lack of fuel, Jo Gartner and Gerhard Berger came in fifth and sixth. However, according to the regulations valid at the time, both were not entitled to points as guest starters.
For the first and so far only time in Grand Prix history (as of 2012) three Austrians were among the top six.
Patrese gave Alfa Romeo the last podium finish in team history.
