Sebring 12 hour race in 1960
The ninth Sebring 12-hour race , also known as the Tenth Annual Sebring International Grand Prix of Endurance for the Amoco Trophy, Sebring , took place on March 26, 1960 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the second round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
After the bad weather conditions in 1959 , the race took place in 1960 on a dry track and in bright sunshine. However, there were other difficulties for the organizer Alec Ulmann . The main sponsor of the race was the American Oil Company . The contract included not only the supply of fuels and lubricants, but also the obligation of the participating teams to use them. Understandably, some of the team leaders did not agree with this requirement because they had contracts with other suppliers. For this reason, Porsche and Ferrari decided not to participate in a factory race after some dispute.
65 vehicles entered the race. Stirling Moss was in the lead in Camoradi Racing - Maserati Tipo 61 when a fatal accident occurred on lap five. Jim Hughes lost control of his Lotus Elite , who overturned several times and met a photographer who, like Hughes, died at the scene of the accident.
After the Maserati retired, the Porsche 718 RS 60 reported by Joakim Bonnier , with Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien at the wheel, took the lead and won the race by new laps over another Porsche. It was the first victory for a Porsche brand racing car in a major international sports car race.
