Politics and world events
- Spring: The Roman Emperor Constantine the Great moves with an army of 40,000 Romans, Gauls and Teutons to Italy, which has been occupied by the usurper Maxentius for five years . He succeeds in defeating the enemy troops at Turin , Brescia and finally Verona . In the final battle, Maxentius' general, the Praetorian prefect Ruricius Pompeianus, fell .
- October 28 : In the north of Rome there is a battle at the Milvian Bridge between the army of Constantine and Maxentius, which consists largely of Praetorians . Allegedly, Constantine's army is said to have the Christ monogram on the shields; in fact, the use of the symbol "Chi-Rho" by Constantine was only proven in the 320s . The battle becomes a victory for Constantine; the numerically superior but inexperienced Praetorians cannot withstand his army. Maxentius drowns in the Tiber while fleeing .
- After entering Rome, Constantine had the 450-year-old Praetorian Guard dissolved, which played an important role in the usurpation of Maxentius. The Praetorians are transferred to regular legionaries and to different parts of the empire. The Castra praetoria is being demolished.
Culture
- The Roman Senate orders the construction of the Arch of Constantine . For financial reasons, reliefs from earlier years are reused.
