In a sea battle at the entrance to the port of Mytilene in the Peloponnesian War , the Athenians lose 30 of their 70 ships and are now besieged there by the Spartan fleet. In order to bring reinforcements from Athens, it is decided that two ships should break through the Spartan siege barrier in front of the port of Mytilene and try to get to Athens. The general Konon is supposed to stay in Mytilene, while his colleagues Erasinides and Leon are supposed to try with one ship each to escape in different directions (out to sea and towards Hellespont). One must assume that Leon commands the one of the two ships that is fleeing towards the open sea. While his colleague Erasinides manages to escape in the direction of Hellespont, Leon's ship is caught by the Spartans after a chase, defeated in battle and dragged back.
The Battle of the Arginus between Athens and Sparta is the greatest sea battle the Greeks have ever fought . In this battle, Athens wins an overwhelming victory over the Spartan fleet under Kallikratidas , who falls in the battle. Since the admirals are unable to rescue seamen from sunken ships or at least to rescue the corpses due to a storm, six of them are brought to justice by the angry and incited people's assembly and executed at the instigation of Theramenes . Among them are Pericles the Younger , a son of the famous statesman Pericles , Aristocrates , Erasinides , Diomedon , Lysias and Thrasyllos . The philosopher Socrates is among the judges on this day and is the only one to withstand the pressure of the angry crowd and refuses to approve the condemnation of the admirals and thus their execution.
