- Mutinous Visigoth mercenaries under their leader Alaric besiege Rome , conquer the city on August 24th and plunder it for three days . Alaric takes Galla Placidia , half-sister of the emperor Honorius , who resides in Ravenna , prisoner.
- Alaric had already deposed his puppet emperor, the usurper Priscus Attalus , as Western Roman emperor.
