The plans, which were presented in autumn 2011, provided for the construction of a 426 meter high skyscraper on Park Avenue in Manhattan in the immediate vicinity of Central Park . With this height after the topping-out ceremony, the building is the second tallest building in the city after the One World Trade Center (541 meters) a few kilometers south in Lower Manhattan . It surpasses the 381 meter high Empire State Building as the second tallest building in New York and the tallest building in Midtown Manhattan. In the USA, it ranks third among the tallest skyscrapers in Chicago, after the One World Trade Center and the 442-meter-long Willis Tower (until 2009 Sears Tower ) in Chicago . In terms of its architectural height, the building is nine meters higher than the former World Trade Center . In terms of design, the building, which has a square base area of 28 m × 28 m, is characterized by its very slim proportions. Even with increasing height, the extremely narrow base area remains unchanged for its size until it ends with a flat roof surrounded by facade walls. As a result, the tower stands out from the surrounding area on the one hand by its shape and on the other hand by its height.

The skyscraper will be used almost exclusively for residential purposes. A total of 104 apartments are located on 89 floors (marketed as 96; according to CTBUH criteria 88). Technical facilities and three additional floors exist underground. The construction costs are said to have been about 1.25 billion US dollars. A three-room apartment is said to cost $ 9.7 million. The penthouse sold for about $ 95 million. It is expected to generate revenues of $ 3 billion. Personal air-conditioned wine cellars range from $ 159,000 to $ 378,000.

The Drake Hotel was previously located on Park Avenue (with the address of the same name as the name) . It was completed in 1926 by the Bing & Bing company and had 21 floors with 495 rooms. It was a well-known upper-class hotel for many decades. In 2006 it was sold by the Swissotel hotel chain for $ 440 million to investor Harry Macklowe, who had the building demolished the following year.

Preparations for the construction site began in January 2012. In May 2012, the first construction work began on the property, in which piles were drilled into the ground for the foundation and concreted. On September 27, 2012, the construction of the first fixed construction crane began on the construction site and was put into operation a few days later. In the first weeks of 2013, a second identical construction crane was installed on the other side of the shell. By mid-February 2013, the concrete work had progressed so far that the construction site of the skyscraper had reached street level. At this point in time, the reinforced concrete core of the building had exceeded street level by several meters. After reaching street level, the construction of the above-ground floors began.

In mid-May 2013, the first glass panes measuring two and a half by two and a half meters were installed. Half of the height, around 210 meters, was reached in January 2014 after the facade cladding had also progressed further. May 17, 2014 marked a milestone when the core of the building surpassed the 300 meter mark for the first time and 432 Park Avenue thus joined the club of New York's Supertall skyscrapers. In mid-June 2014, 432 Park Avenue rose to become the fourth tallest building in New York when it exceeded both the Chrysler Building and the New York Times Tower , each 319 meters, at over 321 meters . On October 13, 2014, the building core reached its final height, with a solemn ceremony being held. However, at this point there were still two floors missing before the building reached its final height of 426 meters. At the end of October 2014, the last crossbeams were installed (two floors above the building core), making 432 Park Avenue the second tallest building in New York and the third tallest in the United States .

The construction work was completed at the end of 2015. The opening took place on December 23, 2015.
