The assassination of Caesar
- Gaius Iulius Caesar becomes consul with Marcus Antonius .
- Marcus Junius Brutus holds the praetur for one year.
- March 15th : Ides of March : Gaius Iulius Caesar is murdered by several senators under the leadership of Marcus Iunius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus in the theater of Pompeius in Rome with 23 dagger stabs.
- March 17 : The Senate meets in the Temple of Tellus and grants Caesar's amnesty to the murderers . Publius Cornelius Dolabella , Cicero's son-in-law , is confirmed as a suffect consul after Caesar.
- March 20 : Caesar's funeral : In front of the speaker's platform ( Forum Romanum ), followers have erected a gold-plated replica of the Temple of Venus Genetrix . In front of the assembled Romans and an army of veterans who have streamed into the city, Mark Antony - once the tribune of the people by Caesar's favor, later the dictator's right hand - reads out the will of the dead: Each citizen receives 300 sesterces as a gift from Caesar's private box .
