AIDA Cruises is a cruise brand of AIDA Cruises - German Branch of Costa Crociere SpA, a Rostock branch of Costa Crociere, which is primarily geared towards the German-speaking market .

The ships are owned by Costa Crociere , the southern European subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc , based in Genoa . Carnival Maritime GmbH in Hamburg , founded in February 2015, is responsible for the operation of the Italian flagged fleet of the brands “Aida Cruises”, “Costa Crociere” and “Costa Asia” . The logo is a "kissable mouth" with the lettering AIDA made of letters in four different colors, based on a design by graphic artist Feliks Büttner from 1996. According to the company, the brand is the market leader in Germany.

history

Change of ownership, economic success

German shipping company

The Deutsche Seereederei (DSR), based in Rostock, was already a state-owned company in the "holiday service" of the GDR with the friendship of the people from 1960 and with the Arkona from 1985 as a cruise operator. In 1993 the company was privatized, to the investor group Horst Rahe and Nicholas H. Schües sold from Hamburg and with the F. Laeisz shipping company to Reederei F. Laeisz merged.

In the same year the new management decided to expand the cruise business with the Arkona with a new building. For the first time on the German market, the concept of a club vacation was to be transferred to cruises based on the American model of “Fun Ships” from Carnival Cruise Lines . The new building was put into service in June 1996 under the name AIDA (today AIDAcara ) and intensively advertised under the marketing name “Das Clubschiff”. One wanted to tie in with the name of the other ships of the shipping company, whose names also began and ended with the letter A. The choice fell on Aida, after a Nubian princess in ancient Egypt and an opera by Giuseppe Verdi , which is often mistakenly associated with the opening of the Suez Canal , so that a reference to shipping was made. The graphic artist Feliks Büttner designed the trademark in 1996. The "kissable mouth" with large eyes and blue eyeliner as the hull finish has been a feature of all AIDA ships since then.

Despite good booking numbers, the company did not make a profit with the AIDA . On the contrary, the marketing of the cabins by Arkona Reisen, which was founded for this purpose, initially cost a lot of money. In order to strengthen the company's liquidity , the ship was sold in August 1997 for 324 million DM to the competitor Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). However, due to a charter contract agreed at the same time, AIDA remained in the operation of the DSR subsidiary Deutsche Seetouristik , which changed its name to Arkona Touristik in 1998 .

P&O

In November 1999, Arkona Touristik left its cruise business to the British shipping company P&O , at that time the world's No. 3 in the cruise business. The sale took place through the transfer of the subsidiary Seetours International , which was first acquired by TUI in October 1997 and which was then entrusted with the operational cruise business and all rights to the AIDA brand. Arkona Touristik retained a 49% minority stake in the newly founded joint venture AIDA Cruises Ltd. in London . only financially involved. Since Seetours was a well-established name for ship travel, P&O added it as part of the name of the German branch to Seetours - German Branch of Aida Cruises . P&O immediately bought back the first AIDA club ship from NCL and ordered two more ships for delivery in 2002 and 2003 from Aker MTW shipyard in Wismar . In 2000, as agreed , Arkona Touristik exchanged its joint venture stake for shares in P&O Princess Cruises International , into which P&O had just spun off its entire cruise business. Thereupon the name of the German branch changed to Seetours - German Branch of P&O Princess Cruises International Ltd.

Carnival Corporation & plc

Since the merger of Carnival plc. renamed P&O Princess Cruises International with the American Carnival Corp. In April 2003, the AIDA Cruises brand also belongs to the newly created world market leader for cruises Carnival Corporation & plc .

In the course of 2004, the group transferred the operation of the AIDA brand from its British part of the company to the Italian group subsidiary Costa Crociere in Genoa, which was already part of Carnival Corp. Italian shipping company taken over. The ownership of the ships initially went to the Società di Crociere Mercurio , also in Genoa, with the German branch AIDA Cruises - German Branch of Società di Crociere Mercurio Srl , from July 2010 then directly to the Costa Crociere , which is why the German branch has been known as AIDA Cruises since then - German Branch of Costa Crociere SpA operates. Your business premises are in rebuilt warehouses at Rostock's city harbor .

Between 2007 and 2013 Carnival invested more than two billion euros in expanding the AIDA fleet. During this period, a new ship was put into service every year. A total of seven ships, all of which were built at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg in Emsland, were put into service.

At the beginning of August 2011, the company announced the order for two new buildings from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan . The ships measured at around 125,000  GT and designed for 3250 passengers were to be delivered in March 2015 and 2016. Their engines also enable operation with environmentally friendly liquid gas and the hulls have a special system for air lubrication , which should save up to seven percent drive energy. The construction of the first newbuild, the AIDAprima , which was laid on keel on June 30, 2013 , was delayed. The announced 50-day maiden voyage from Japan to Dubai and Hamburg had to be postponed from March to October 1, 2015 and finally canceled on August 4, 2015. The ship was christened on May 7, 2016 in Hamburg. The delivery of the AIDAperla , the second new building, was also delayed by more than a year until mid-2017.

In February 2015, Costa Crociere founded the subsidiary Carnival Maritime GmbH in Hamburg. As the new operating company, under the management of Jens Lassen, it took over the management of the cruise ships of the brands “AIDA Cruises”, “Costa Crociere” and “Costa Asia”, which had previously been operated from Genoa and Rostock. On September 1, 2015, the Costa Group appointed Felix Eichhorn as the new "President" of AIDA Cruises. Michael Ungerer, who has held this position as Michael Thamm's successor since 2012, moved to Carnival Asia within the company.

A preliminary agreement concluded in March 2015 between the parent company Carnival Corporation & plc and Meyer-Werft for the construction of four new Helios-class ships between 2019 and 2022 was converted into a firm order three months later. Two of the ships are to come into service for AIDA Cruises. The ships are to be measured at 183,900 GT, 337 meters long and 42 meters wide. The type ship AIDAnova was put into service in December 2018. It was contractually agreed that the second ship should be delivered in spring 2021. In 2018, a third ship was ordered for delivery in 2023 Template: future / in 3 years.

Use of the ships

AIDA Cruises offered cruises in the Adriatic Sea, southern Africa and Asia, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, North America and Northern Europe, the Orient and the Baltic Sea until spring 2020.

On February 15, 2020, all trips to, from and in Asia and Australia were canceled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic . At the end of March 2020, four- and five-day short trips in the western Mediterranean to and from Mallorca should take place, and the closed Italian ports of Civitavecchia and Livorno should be replaced by alternative contact points in Spain or France. These plans also expired in March 2020. AIDAdiva, traveling through the Caribbean, had to look for alternatives at short notice due to the refusal to enter the ports of Montego Bay in Jamaica and George Town on the Cayman Islands . The AIDAaura was not allowed to call at the port of the Norwegian city of Bergen in mid-March and was initially only able to continue the route "Winter in the Far North" with difficulty and was finally canceled.

Due to the compulsory break during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ships of the AIDA fleet were temporarily out of service for months. At the beginning of August 2020, the fourteen AIDA ships were at the following locations after several of them had to change location several times:

Originally, the first voyage of an AIDA Cruises ship was supposed to start on August 5, 2020 (as a round trip from Hamburg to Hamburg without going ashore). This trip and other trips planned for August 2020 had to be canceled. AIDA Cruises then planned to resume cruise operations on September 6, 2020. The AIDAperla and the AIDAblu are to take tours from Kiel without going ashore. All other AIDA Cruises ships are still subject to the “cruise season interruption” until at least September 30, 2020.

Numbers and dates

According to its own statements, AIDA Cruises has been the market leader in Germany for several years . According to the brand website, the capacity in 2020 on 14 ships was a total of 31,888 beds. During the same period, the division around the AIDA Cruises brand employed around 15,000 people from 50 countries, around 13,500 of whom were on board the ships and 1,500 on land. According to information from the statistics portal Statista, sales in the 2017/2018 tourism year were around EUR 1.85 billion. In the annual reports of the Carnival Group, however, sales of the individual brands or subsidiary lines are not shown separately.

The income from the operation of the ships is subject to the tonnage tax that is also permissible in Italy for cruise ships . An analysis by the New York Times in 2011 found that the Carnival Corporation had paid an average tax rate of 1.1% on its income from the use of tax-saving models - including the Carnival Corporation is based in Panama - over the previous five years . The Group generated sales of EUR 17.5 billion in fiscal 2017 dollars and generated 2.67 billion US dollar profit, but led for only 60 million US dollars from taxes.

Trade flag

All AIDA ships belong to Italy's merchant navy. As a result, the environmental, labor and tax regulations of the flag country apply to the ships.

Until 2015, the shipping company paid its employees in the restaurants with 587 US dollars a month. The Hamburg-based company justified this with the argument that the employees in the hotel service in the Philippines would only earn 150 to 250 dollars, but on the ships 700 to 900 dollars plus board and lodging. Die Zeit calculated that the crew members would get more than 2000 US dollars according to the German minimum wage.

Marketing and Sales

The name Seetours has been used again as a sales brand since March 2013 . Special offers under the cruise brands of the Costa Crociere can be booked via a website of the same name.

At the beginning of September 2013, the company announced that it would dispense with the addition “The Club Ship” and replace it with “Unique. Replace again and again. It was also planned to offer the AIDA website for international sales partners in English.

Joint ventures and service companies for the AIDA brand

To produce the shows and other entertainment activities on board the ships, the joint venture SeeLive - Tivoli Entertainment & Consulting GmbH was founded with Schmidts TIVOLI GmbH in 2001 . The Hamburg-based company, which also included the Hamburg School of Entertainment GmbH , which was founded in 2004 , changed its name to AIDA Entertainment GmbH in 2011 . From September 1st 2011 it was led by Borris Brandt , the former managing director of Endemol Germany . The successor company from November 2012 onwards was AIDA Entertainment GmbH & Co. OHG , which expired in February 2013. As head of the AIDA entertainment division, Brandt is still working for the Carnival group today (as of 2018).

In 2004 Call4Cruise GmbH was founded in Rostock , which took over the reservation and booking center for the AIDA fleet, which had already grown to four ships. In August 2011 she changed her name to AIDA Kundencenter GmbH .

Logo (2009 to 2012)

In summer 2008, the European Cruise Academy was established as a public-private partnership with the University of Wismar as an educational academy for young professionals in the nautical-technical field. Tino Hensel, who is responsible for the corporate division around the AIDA brand at Costa Crociere, took over the management. In the 2008/2009 winter semester, a master’s course was launched with a special focus on the cruise industry, with three bachelor’s courses to follow a year later. At the beginning of 2012, however, it was merged with the company's own AIDA Academy education and training center and the operating company European Cruise Academy GmbH was deleted from the commercial register in the same year.

LNG hybrid barge Hummel on May 29, 2015

Along with Becker Marine Systems has been in Hamburg , the HPE Hybrid Port Energy GmbH & Co. KG established that an LNG hybrid since mid-2014 Barge for the power supply of cruise ships at the cruise terminal in the Port of Hamburg operates. On the 74 m long barge known as “Hummel” , special LNG- powered Caterpillar engines and five generators from Zeppelin Power Systems generate electricity with an output of 7.5 MW (50/60 Hz) and power it up via a cable the water side to the cruise ship. The company celebrated the first electricity generated for AIDAsol on May 29, 2015 as a world premiere.

environmental Protection

The company's environmental commitment is documented in the annual sustainability report AIDA cares . Here, the company presents various measures to make the ships a little more environmentally friendly, such as optimized hull design, low-friction underwater coatings and modern engine technology. The cruise line is involved in the e4ships project initiated by the German government to develop fuel cells for the energy supply on cruise ships near the port. For the engines of the two new builds of the Hyperion class from Japan, the move away from heavy fuel oil in favor of diesel oil as a ship engine fuel was declared. In mid-June 2015 it was announced that the new ships planned for delivery from 2019 at Meyer-Werft would be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Environmentalists have been criticizing the lack of exhaust technology on AIDA ships for years . In December 2011, Michael Thamm , the "President" of AIDA Cruises at the time, was awarded the negative Dinosaur of the Year prize alongside Richard Vogel from TUI Cruises .

“Their supposedly 'white fleets' are in truth dirty soot spinners, because the cruise ships still use toxic heavy fuel on the high seas . This means that a single ocean liner emits as many pollutants on a cruise as five million cars on the same route. The dangers to the environment and human health could easily be avoided, but out of greed for profit, German shipowners have so far refused to use marine diesel and to install exhaust technology such as soot particle filters . "

- Olaf Tschimpke , Chairman of the Nature Conservation Union Germany

Holger Watter, expert for sustainable energy systems at the Maritime Center of the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences , contradicted the NABU calculation. According to his calculations, the pollutant emissions of a cruise ship can only be compared with around 0.6 to 1000 small cars, depending on the pollutant parameters such as soot particles, carbon dioxide or sulfur oxides.

“A car that parks most of the day is juxtaposed with a ship that operates 24 hours a day. It's like comparing apples with oranges. "

- Holger Watter, Professor in the Energy and Biotechnology Department at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences

The Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) described AIDA as the clear loser of its cruise check from 2013. In the opinion of NABU, the industry leader's expectations and reality diverged the greatest. In August 2013, the company announced that it would invest 100 million euros by 2016 in environmental protection. With these funds, the newbuildings from Japan were to receive a filter system to reduce exhaust gases, and the ships already in service were to be retrofitted. The emission of soot particles, nitrogen and sulfur oxides can be filtered and reduced by between 90 and 99%. According to criticism from NABU in May 2017, none of the AIDA ships, including the newly commissioned AIDAprima, had been equipped with a soot particle filter up to this point .

In 2019, the AIDA Nova topped the NABU cruise ranking. As in 2018, AIDAnova led the assessment of air pollutant emissions. The AIDAprima and AIDAperla also occupy front seats. The liquid gas-powered drive leads to a good ranking.

Another part of the investment program was the installation of an LNG hybrid barge in the port of Hamburg to supply the ships with electricity at a berth . It went into operation for the first time on October 18, 2014 under the name Hummel and began regular operations at the end of May 2015. The emission of sulfur oxides and soot particles should be avoided at this berth, nitrogen oxides by up to 80% and carbon dioxide by 30% compared to operation with ship engines.

In August 2015, landings in the Faroe Islands by ships of the AIDA Cruises brand were canceled until further notice to express disapproval of the hunt for dolphins and whales. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Forum (WDSF) had previously drawn attention to the fact that the Faroe Islands passed a law in June 2015 that obliges locals and tourists to report to the island authorities any sightings of marine mammals within the twelve-mile zone. Their information would be used for the traditionally hunted sea mammals by the islands known as grindadráp . After the Hapag-Lloyd cruise line also joined in with cancellations, the environmental protection organization Sea Shepherd spoke of a "devastating blow to the Faroe Islands' tourism industry" in response to their ongoing hunt.
