history

Foundation and advancement

ASV Hertha was founded in 1904 by some of the players in the youth team of SpC Rudolfshügel Vienna who had separated from the club. In 1907 he joined the Austrian Football Association , where the football club was divided into 2nd class. In the game year 1910/11, he was finally promoted to 1st class, shortly before an official Austrian championship was held for the first time in the 1911/12 season . The ASV Hertha was a founding member of the championship.

The rise, however, was quite controversial. 2nd class champion in the 1910/11 season was actually Rennweger SV . Numerous other teams protested that the Rennweger pitch was one meter too short. The protest was accepted, all home games of the club were penalized with 0: 3 and the RSV was ranked last in the league. So ASV Hertha became 2nd class champion, after which he was able to prevail in some additional qualifying games for promotion to 1st class.

The first years in the championship

ASV Hertha got off to a good start in the first championship season. The first game against Viktoria Wien ended 5: 1 for the club. Overall, the top Austrian clubs at the time were too strong for the promoted team, so that at the end of the season they found themselves in 8th place, the first non-relegation place. The district rival SpC Rudolfshügel protested against this rating. He scored the same number of points in the championship as ASV Hertha, but, as he had one less win to record, was only 10th and therefore had to be relegated. The reason for the protest was that a Hertha victory was due to a lost but criminally verified game against First Vienna FC 1894 . It was therefore decided to have a pre-qualification carried out. ASV Hertha competed against SpC Rudolfshügel, the loser had to go into relegation. Hertha won with an overall result of 6-2 from two games and thus remained in the first class. Ultimately, the SpC Rudolfshügel was able to clearly prevail in the relegation.

In the following season things went significantly worse for the club. Only three wins from 18 games wanted to succeed. This meant the last place. However, four games against ASV Hertha were criminally verified because unauthorized players were used . In the relegation against the 2nd class champion, SC Wacker Wien , however, they could assert themselves 4: 2. After another bad season, where you came second to last, you could sit up and take notice in the first war season 1914/15 with a 5th place. The First World War , however, hit the club very hard. You lost your home stadium and could hardly shine in sporting terms either. In 1915/16 there were 16 defeats in 18 games. It began an unglorious run of three last places in a row and only one win per season in the championship. Since the relegation rule was suspended throughout the war, ASV Hertha could always remain in the top Austrian league.

A new beginning and ups and downs after the First World War

After the end of the war, ASV Hertha recovered quickly and achieved very good placings in the championship. The highlight was again a 5th place in 1921. From then on, however, things slowly went downhill again. In 1922 they finished sixth, then eighth and finally found themselves in a relegation zone in 1924. However, they were a little unlucky, as three teams, including Hertha, were relegated in the relegation season due to a league downsizing. A win against the amateurs on the last day of the match would have been enough to keep them up.

In the second division, the ASV Hertha was able to prevail immediately and rose again in 1925 together with the Floridsdorfer AC in the first division. However, this turned out to be too strong for the club. As the last one you had to relegate immediately in the next season. In the second division, the football club presented itself even more strongly. With 103 goals in 24 games and only one defeat, they immediately marched back into the first division in 1927.

The end

This time, however, you could establish yourself again in the top division. With a 6th place in 13 clubs, the team showed its old strengths again. In the cup, too, they attracted attention by reaching the semi-finals. In the quarter-finals they even managed to turn the game on the Hohe Warte against the Austrian record champions Rapid Wien after falling behind and win 3-1. But the success was short-lived; the end came all the sooner. In 1929 it was only enough for 9th place, a year later they were only in last place in the table. This time, however, the club's decline continued in the second division. At first, after disappointing results, they left voluntarily and finally dissolved completely in 1940.

Known players

Probably the most famous player of the club was Matthias Sindelar . He joined the ASV Hertha youth team in 1918 and made his debut in the combat team for the first time in 1922. His knee problems in particular troubled him during this time. As early as the summer of 1924, Sindelar was lured away by the " amateurs ", where he became arguably the best football player in Austria.

The second great talent that the club produced was Josef "Pepi" Bican . The later Austrian and Czechoslovak national player began playing football at ASV Hertha at the age of 10, and when he was 15 he moved to a small lower house club, where he played so convincingly that he was signed by Rapid Vienna in 1928 when he was just 17 years old . Bican is now considered the second best Austrian football player of all time, but was even placed above Matthias Sindelar by many former football greats of his time. In contrast to the more serious and introverted Sindelar, Pepi Bican was seen as an open-minded, funny person, but also as a "problem child", for whom football played a subordinate role in his life.
