The Aargauische Südbahn is a former Swiss railway company . As a joint subsidiary of the Swiss Central Railway (SCB) and the Swiss Northeast Railway (NOB), it connected their routes from Aarau and Brugg with the starting point of the Gotthard Railway (GB) in Immensee.

history

From 1873 to 1882, the Swiss Central Railway (SCB) and the Swiss Northeast Railway (NOB) built a connection between their lines and the Gotthard Railway, which was then emerging . This Aargauische Südbahn operated by the Centralbahn ran from Rupperswil via Lenzburg , Wohlen and Rotkreuz to Immensee . The Gotthard Railway begins in Immensee (kilometer 0), but the locomotive change for freight trains usually took place in Rotkreuz from the start, and only in exceptional cases in Immensee. Branch lines led from Wohlen to Bremgarten and from Hendschiken to Brugg .

The routes were opened as follows:

  • June 23, 1874: Rupperswil – Lenzburg – Hendschiken – Wohlen
  • June 1, 1875: Wohlen– Muri
  • September 1, 1876: Wohlen – Bremgarten West (as an independent company, Wohlen-Bremgarten-Bahn )
  • December 1, 1881: Muri – Sins –Rotkreuz
  • June 1, 1882: Rotkreuz – Immensee, together with the Gotthard railway line to Göschenen
  • June 1, 1882: Hendschiken - Othmarsingen - Brugg AG
  • May 26, 1969: Brugg connection line

In 1902, the Swiss Central Railway was integrated into the newly founded Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) together with the Aargau Southern Railway . In 1912, the SBB leased the Wohlen – Bremgarten West line to the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn (BD), which installed a third rail for its meter-gauge narrow-gauge railways. A planned route from Brugg via Böttstein to Waldshut was never built.

The connection line at Brugg, which enabled trains to pass directly from the Bözberg line to the Aargau Southern Railway, runs straight from the Aare Bridge over the tracks of the Brugg-Aarau line and the Brugg locomotive depot to the Southern Railway. Until the opening on May 26, 1969, all trains from Basel in the direction of Gotthard in Brugg had to change direction.

After the construction of the Heitersberg line (start of operation in 1975), the Rupperswil-Lenzburg-Othmarsingen section had to accommodate much more traffic; Most of the east-west traffic between Zurich and Bern now uses this direct route.

On December 12, 1980, the first five tracks of the "Dottikon compensation group" were put into operation, the remaining five tracks with the timetable change on May 31, 1981. The facility, also called "Dottikon Umspannanlage" or "Dottikon USA", has ten 750 meter long tracks for parking north-south freight trains and excess freight wagons.

On July 18, 1982, six people were killed and around a hundred injured in the collision of a freight train with a night express train Dortmund - Rimini near Othmarsingen.

traffic

Nowadays, the route from Brugg AG to Rotkreuz of the Aargau Southern Railway is mostly used by freight trains from the north via the Basel marshalling yard to the Gotthard and to Italy and is therefore an important route for the transit freight railway.

Regional passenger transport:

  • The S26 runs every half hour between Rotkreuz and Lenzburg (every hour to Olten). At rush hour there are repeater trains between Lenzburg and Muri. Since the opening of the third Lenzburg - Gexi track, the trains that ended in Othmarsingen for a few years due to capacity reasons have been able to travel to Lenzburg again, where they offer connections to Aarau and Zurich.
  • The Aarau-Lenzburg-Brugg route is served every hour by the S23 (Langenthal-Aarau-Lenzburg-Brugg-Baden).
  • The S25 runs every hour from Brugg to Muri.
  • During the rush hour from Monday to Friday, the S42 Muri-Othmarsingen-Dietikon-Zurich HB offers four pairs of trains every hour in the morning and evening.

In addition, in the event of delays, long-distance trains run on the Südbahn if there is a route conflict with the scheduled traffic on the route between Arth-Goldau and Zug.
