Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan ( Arabic عبد الفتاح عبد الرحمن البرهان, DMG ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān al-Burhān ; * 1960 ) is a Sudanese general and politician who is currently chairman of the Sovereign Council and thus serves as the de facto head of state of Sudan . Previously, he was chairman of the de facto ruling military council after the previous chairman of the transition council, Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf , resigned on April 12, 2019.

Before that, Burhan was the inspector general of the Sudan People's Armed Forces and commander of the ground forces .

Burhans deputy as president of the Military Council was Mohammed Hamdan Daglo , formerly known by the nickname "Hemeti" commander of a Janjaweed brigade in Darfur .

On August 21, 2019, Burhan was sworn in as chairman of the newly created “Sovereign Council”, which consists of six civilians and five military members.
