Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Risha (2007)

Abd as-Sattar Abu Risha ( Arabic عبد الستار أبو ريشة, DMG ʿAbd as-Sattār Abū Rīša ; * 1972 ; † September 13, 2007 in Ramadi , al-Anbar , Iraq ) was chairman and co-founder of an alliance of Sunni clan leaders who, with the support of the US Marines, opposed the al-Qaida- controlled unrest in Iraq.

biography

Abu Risha was the descendant of a leader in the great Iraqi uprising against the British occupation in 1920.

Sheikh Abu Risha, whose father and three of his brothers were also murdered by al-Qaeda, founded the Anbar Rescue Front (“Council for the Solution of Anbar”) in September 2006. Many of the council members are believed to have previously supported the riot in the country on tactical grounds; Abu Risha rejected this for himself.

His movement, also known as “The Anbars Awakening”, includes 42 clans and sub- clans from the western Iraqi province of al-Anbar, which he said further groups in the province wanted to join in 2007.

George W. Bush spoke to the Sheikh, who was considered a close ally of the United States in Iraq, on September 3, 2007 during a surprise visit to the US air base al-Assad. Ten days later he was murdered along with his private secretary and two bodyguards in a bomb attack near his home in Ramadi. The al-Qaeda confessed on 14 September 2007 for the attack. His brother, Sheikh Ahmed Abu Risha , was named as his successor.

Abu Risha was not without controversy in Iraq. Tribesmen from al-Anbar province and members of the Iraqi government feared that the United States would make Abu Risha a provincial prince with his own militia .
