Abusir ( Arabic أبو صير, DMG Abū Ṣīr ) is a village in Egypt with an important ancient Egyptian city of the dead .

Ancient Egyptian necropolis

In Egyptology , however, this name is used to refer to an ancient Egyptian necropolis . It lies between Giza and Saqqara and is the location of various temples and pyramids , mostly from the 5th dynasty . Other tombs date to the Middle Kingdom and belong to priests who practiced the cult of the dead at the pyramids there. Some of these burials were found untouched, such as the grave of Herischefhotep . In the late period , some gigantic shaft graves of high officials were finally built here. The tomb of Iufaa from this time was found unlooted. The place of the sun sanctuary of Niuserre at the northern end of the necropolis is also named after the today's village of Abu Gorab (also Abu Gurob ).
