The Adolf Werth memorial stone in the Barmer Forest

Adolf Werth (born April 25, 1839 in Barmen , today a district of Wuppertal ; † February 22, 1915 ibid) was a German manufacturer , local researcher and co-founder of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein and the Schlossbauverein Burg .

The heir of a factory for Barmer articles , the Werth & Co company of his father Johann Wilhelm Werth senior, dealt with the history of the Bergisches Land and the Wuppertal at an early age . In 1869 he founded the Barmer department of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein and the following year with others the Schlossbauverein Burg, which set itself the task of rebuilding the derelict residence and early fortified castle of the Bergische dukes .

From 1872 he was in charge of the archives of the Barmer parish with rare and valuable documents of the town and church history, which was previously looked after by his father. These certificates include the award of the Elberfelder and Barmer Garnnahrung . He researched the history of the Barmer Hof Werth , first mentioned in 1466 , from which his family descended, and the Barmer schools. He also researched the Bergische Landwehr .

Numerous other writings and publications, including in the journal of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein , followed, including a Barmen church chronicle in 1902 for the 200th anniversary of the community and the city history for the centenary of the city of Barmen in 1908.

After his death in 1915, Adolf Werth was buried in the Evangelical Reformed cemetery on Bartholomäusstrasse . In the Barmer Wald near the Toelleturm , a memorial stone with an inscription was erected in his honor on July 15, 1916 with the help of the Barmer Beautification Association . Immediately behind the memorial stone is the wall of the Barmer line of the Bergische Landwehr, protected as a ground monument , about which he published.

His tombstone, which last bore the barely legible inscription “ Der Bergisches Geschichtsverein Barmen - In gratitude dedicated to Adolf Werth ”, was removed in 1986 when his grave was re-occupied.
