The Aechmea are a genus of plants from the subfamily Bromelioideae in the Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). There are around 250 to 300 species in this genus. The Greek word aechme means lance tip and so one occasionally finds the name lance bromeliads for this genus. The best known species of the genus is Aechmea fasciata , it is also called the lance rosette .

Appearance and leaves

The Aechmea species are perennial herbaceous plants . These funnel or cistern bromeliads usually grow as epiphytes . There are species of very different sizes: from the small Aechmea recurvata with a funnel diameter and height of around 20 centimeters to species with a 2 meter funnel diameter and inflorescences that are over 2 meters high. The tough leaves are always reinforced at the edge (as with all representatives of the Bromelioideae). Large amounts of water often collect in the leaf funnels. In many funnels there are small biotopes with several animal species as well as algae and aquatic plants.

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers are too many in mostly attractive, long-lasting inflorescences (inflorescences), they can be simple or composed. To the inflorescences often sit strikingly colored bracts (bracts); the color red dominates (mostly with a blue component).

The flowers are threefold. The color of the bracts (they are often blue or bluish-red) and the strong nectar secretion show that hummingbirds are the pollinators . The three sepals are fused into a short tube and usually have a spike tip, rarely they are blunt. The three petals are fused Roehrig. Two small scales on the petals (ligulae) form a feature that botanists use to distinguish them from other genera of the subfamily. There are two circles, each with three, mostly free fertile stamens ; they are usually shorter than the petals. Three carpels have become an under constant ovary grown.

The floral formula is: .

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are berries ; when ripe they are often strongly colored; red to blue dominate here. The fruits are eaten by animals (especially birds , less often bats and monkeys ). The seeds are excreted undigested and get onto branches with the excrement.

Systematics

The genus Aechmea was established in 1794 by Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón y Jiménez . The generic name Aechmea Ruiz & Pav. Nom. cons. is conserved according to the ICBN rules (Vienna ICBN Art. 14.4 & App. III) compared to Hoiriri Adans. , who lived in Fam. pl. 2, pp. 67, 584.

The genus Aechmea was previously divided into eight subgenera. The reactivation of the subgenus Chevaliera (Gaudich. Ex Beer) Baker to the genus Chevaliera Gaudich. ex Beer was not recognized in the following processing of the genus Aechmea . So it remains with eight sub-genera:

  • Subgenus Aechmea
  • Subgenus Chevaliera (Gaudich. Ex Beer) Baker : It contains only three species.
  • Subgenus Lamprococcus (Beer) Baker
  • Subgenus Macrochordion (de Vriese) Baker
  • Subgenus Ortgiesia : The 21 species are only distributed in southeastern Brazil.
  • Subgenus Platyaechmea (Baker) Baker (Syn .: Aechmea subgen. Hoplophytum (Beer) Mez )
  • Subgenus Podaechmea Mez
  • Subgenus Pothuava (Baker) Baker

use

Some species and their varieties are used as ornamental plants in tropical to subtropical parks and gardens. The species that do not get too big are also suitable as house plants. There are some hybrids . The best known species of the genus is Aechmea fasciata , it is also called the lance rosette .
