The municipality of Agia Paraskevi ( Greek Αγία Παρασκευή ( f. Sg. )) Is a suburb of Athens , Greece , which is about ten kilometers northeast of the capital. Agia Paraskevi has 56,839 inhabitants on an area of about 8 km².

geography

Agia Paraskevi belongs to the Attica region . The city is built at the foot of Mount Hymettos , so there are considerable differences in altitude within the city. The average height is given as 230 m. The suburb consists of seven districts: Agios Ioannis (Άγιος Ιωάννης), Kondopefko (Κοντόπευκο), Tsakos (Τσακός), Nea Zoi (Νέα Ζωή), Stavros (Στα ος) (ταos) (καεοσις), Pefkakia (κραεοσς), Pefkakia (κάεos), Pefkakia. Agia Paraskevi - like most of the suburbs of Athens - is densely populated, but the townscape is loosened up by a few parks and tree-covered streets. The mountain towering over the city is overgrown with pine forests.

climate

The climate is Mediterranean with continental elements. The winters are mild with increased humidity and the summers are dry. In winter there is a large temperature difference between day and night, snowfalls are not uncommon (once or twice a year). Almost every summer there are heat waves with temperatures of up to 42 ° C. Even when it rains heavily, the city is never flooded because of the sloping terrain.

history

Pausanias reports that in ancient times the entire area of today's city of Agia Paraskevi belonged to the large community of Flya (Δήμος Φλύας) at that time. According to Pausanias, it was full of forests and game that could be hunted. In Flya, deities of the underworld were worshiped and mysterious ceremonies (similar to the Mysteries of Eleusis ) took place. During the Roman era, the poet Ovid praised the area's beauty and healthy climate.

In the last years of the Byzantine era the story of Agia Paraskevis revolved around the life of the monastery of “Agios Ioannis the Hunter”. This monastery was founded in 1185, probably by the monk "Vasilios the Hunter" ( Vasilios o Kynigos Βασίλειος ο Κυνηγός).

During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, a small part of the monastery was demolished in order to use the stones to fortify the Acropolis of Athens.

It is not known exactly when the first houses were built in the area. Until 1931 Agia Paraskevi belonged to the municipality of Athens and later to Chalandri . It was recognized as a separate parish in 1931 and rapid urban development began. In 1960 Agia Paraskevi had completely lost its agricultural character and was already a developed city. The gallery owner Alexander Iolas spent his twilight years there .

In August 2004, during the 2004 Summer Olympics , part of the marathon ran through the main streets of Agia Paraskevi.

Infrastructure

In 2003, Agia Paraskevi was directly connected to Athens Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) by the Hymettos Ring motorway . A subway station went into operation in 2006.

economy

The research institute NCSR Demokritos has its seat in Agia Paraskevi, as well as the broadcasting house of the Greek public service broadcaster is in town.
