List of grape varieties

Agiorgitiko ([ aʝɔrˈʝitikɔ ], Greek Αγιωργίτικο , to Ai Giorgos Άι Γιώργος ' Saint George ') is a red wine variety that is also known as St. George's vine or Mavro Nemea . After the varieties Mavroudi , Liatiko , Romeiko and Mavro Naoussis, it is the fifth most widely grown red variety in Greece and is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world.

Descent, origin

The exact origin is suspected in the areas of Argolis and Korinthia in the Peloponnese. The parentage is unknown. It is said to have been cultivated in ancient Greece.

The grape variety Agiorgitiko was named after the former name of the town of Nemea , Agios Georgis .

distribution

Agiorgitiko is the most common Greek red wine variety. It is mainly grown in the Attica and Peloponnese regions. The area under vines in Greece was 2,905 hectares in 2010. The variety is not cultivated in any other country. Agiorgitiko is the main component of most red wines from this region and is often used as a single variety . It ripens late, has an intense color, is aromatic and is sometimes compared to Merlot . Due to the intense color, the wines are nicknamed Hercules blood.

properties

The late-ripening, high-yielding red wine variety is very susceptible to viral diseases, as well as to both types of powdery mildew and botrytis.

Wine

It produces color-intensive red wines with velvety tannins and aromas of sour cherries and currants, as well as aging potential.

For several years it has been blended very successfully with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon . Evangelos Averoff began this practice near Metsovo in the late 1950s and created the popular table wine Katogi Averoff ( Κατώγι Αβέρωφ ).
