history

In the wine cellar

In the 1960s, Evangelos Averoff produced a wine from Cabernet Sauvignon and Agiorgitiko grapes at his Katogi winery , which he called Katogi-Averoff and bottled. For the first time it was possible to win a cuvée that was composed of a foreign and an autochthonous Greek grape variety . These activities were very limited, as Averoff, as a minister (1956-1963 foreign minister and 1974-1981 defense minister), had little time to spend on the winery. The winery operated as a non-profit organization for many years.

The Strofilia winery was founded in 1930. In 1981 the Maltezos family acquired the business and planted the Savatiano , Ugni Blanc and Cabernet grape varieties . In 1985 Strofilia became known with a wine made from the autochthonous Savatiano and Roditis vines. In the 1990s a second winery was opened in Nemea , a wine-growing region in the Peloponnese.

In 2001 the two wineries from Metsovo, Katogi-Averoff SA and Strofilia merged to form Katogi-Strofilia . Both names are retained as product names. The company's other activities include the Averoff Art Gallery and the Katogi Averoff Hotel, which opened in 2008 .
