Ahmed Abdullah

Ahmed Abdullah (actually Leroy Bland , * 10. May 1947 in New York City ) is an American jazz - trumpet .

Live and act

Ahmed Abdullah began playing the trumpet at the age of thirteen under the influence of Louis Armstrong's music and initially worked with local rhythm and blues bands . In the mid-1960s he turned to the free jazz movement; in the 1970s he was known in the New York loft scene ( Wildflowers Loft Sessions , 1976) and played in 1976 and again in 1990 in Sun Ra Arkestra. Since then he has worked a. a with Ed Blackwell , Arthur Blythe , Malachi Favors , Billy Bang , Chico Freeman , Ronnie Boykins , Charles Brackeen , Steve Reid , John Hicks , Sam Rivers and Marion Brown . Abdullah led his Solomonic quintet and formations such as Abdullah Life's Force , NAM and Ebonic Tones and recorded several albums for the About Time , Silkheart , CIMP and Cadence Jazz labels . a Charles Brackeen, Vincent Chancey , Jay Hoggard , Charles Moffett , Fred Hopkins , Carlos Ward, and David S. Ware contributed.

Inspired by the birth of his daughter on the day after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , he recorded the highly acclaimed album Tara's Song in May 2004 with Billy Bang, baritone saxophonist Alex Harding , bassist Alex Blake and drummer Andre Stobert , with compositions by Sun Ra (“Tapestry”, “Late in a Pleasant Mood”), Gigi Gryce (“Sans Souci”) and a long version of his own composition “The Cave”. In 2013 he worked with Charles Burnham , Reggie Nicholson and DD Jackson .

Ahmed Abdullah taught at the New School University of New York.
