Akufen is the stage name of Canadian techno - producer and DJ Marc Leclair, the most important members of the cut-up applies -Techno. The name Akufen is derived from acouphène , the French word for tinnitus . Leclair has also published under the pseudonyms Nefuka, Horror Inc., Anna Buy and David Scott.

music

In his youth Akufen was a guitarist and pianist in a fusion trio. At the age of 16 he sold the guitar in order to be able to afford a sequencer and a synthesizer . He earned his living as a butcher and cartoonist . He later gave up a career as a painter and illustrator to devote himself entirely to music. He is influenced by both new music composers such as Philip Glass and Steve Reich and early representatives of electronic dance music such as Kraftwerk and jazz. Akufen has published under various trendy labels such as Perlon , Force Inc. Music Works and Hautec and considers the spread over several labels to be an integral part of his music.

Akufen's music is based on samples that he usually takes from the radio. These are fragments from existing pieces as well as jingles , fragments of speech and noises. The samples are mixed into sound collages, often using a Roland TR-808 or 909 for the rhythm. Sometimes the sound fragments alternate so quickly that they can no longer be identified. He calls this production method microsampling . His best-known album to date is My Way , which he recorded in a remote forest hut in Québec and which received consistently positive reviews.

Akufen sees himself as a representative of experimental music and refuses to address itself exclusively to clubbers. It does not claim to be easy to consume. As an important extra-musical influence on the mood of his music, he names surrealism and Dadaism as well as horror films , which he also directly processed musically in his project Horrorama . It first reached a large audience at the turn of the millennium. During this time, the Canadian house and techno scene, especially that of his hometown Montreal, became popular with him . Akufen was one of their most important representatives. His work was described as difficult to categorize and style- defining for minimal techno and was often compared with that of Matthew Herbert . His music is partly assigned to the Clicks & Cuts direction .
