Alan John Dixon (* 7. July 1927 in Belleville , Illinois ; † 6. July 2014 in Fairview Heights , Illinois) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and Senator for the state of Illinois.

Life

Dixon went to school in Illinois and later studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He completed his studies with a Juris Doctor at Washington University in St. Louis . During World War II he served in the United States Navy .

After serving as Senator, Dixon worked for Bryan Cave LLP, an international law firm. Most recently he lived in Fairview Heights, where he died the day before his 87th birthday.

In 1951 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and to the State Senate in 1963 , where he remained until 1971. After that, he served until 1977 as State Treasurer of Illinois, before he followed there as successor to Michael Howlett , the Office of the Secretary of State exercised. In 1981 he became a US Senator for Illinois. He represented the state in Congress until 1993 . In the party primaries in 1992, he was surprisingly defeated by the candidate Carol Moseley Braun and was therefore not nominated for a third term. Braun also won the subsequent general election and succeeded Dixon in the Senate.
