John McLean

John McLean (born February 4, 1791 in Guilford County , North Carolina , † October 14, 1830 in Shawneetown , Illinois ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Illinois in both houses of Congress .

Life

McLean was born in North Carolina in 1791, but moved with his parents to Logan County , Kentucky, with his parents in 1795 . He moved to the newly formed Illinois Territory in 1815 and soon studied law. After graduating, he was admitted to the bar and began working in Shawneetown, Gallatin County . After Illinois joined the United States, he was the Democratic-Republican Party in the House of Representatives of the 15th Congress elected, to which he belonged December 3, 1818 to March 3, 1819th He missed re-election in 1818 and was unable to enter parliament in the subsequent elections in 1820 and 1822. Instead, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1820, 1826 and 1828 , where he was also the speaker at times .

When Ninian Edwards left the United States Senate in 1824 , McLean was re-elected for him. He was a member of the Senate from November 23, 1824 to March 3, 1825. He had not run for re-election and instead continued to run his law firm. Only in the next Senate election, this time for that of the second class, did he stand up for the Jacksonians again . He was also elected and served again in the Senate from March 4, 1829 until his death on October 14, 1830. John McLean was buried in Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown.

The McLean County , Illinois was named after him.
